GRANT ROUND COMPLETE

Description

Hi, my name is Jaga Mete-Smith, in May this year, I had the honour of being selected for the final U19 Mens NZ Basketball team to travel to Greece to compete in the FIBA U19 World Cup in June

I started playing basketball when I was 14. This is later than a lot of kids, however I love the game and I work hard to achieve to the best of my ability. Basketball has been my motivation to stay focussed on the positive things in life and work as hard as I can at school.

I play representative basketball for Basketball Auckland. This year I competed in the AON BBNZ National Championships in Dunedin. I was named in the All-Tournament team. In 2017 I was named in the All-Tournament team in the U17 age grade. I love the honour of representing my region and country, and always compete hard and perform the best I can.

The difficult part of representative sport is the cost. Like most sports, Basketball is a user pays sport. So it is difficult for my family to support my participation financially. I do not like to place the burden on my family, but this has been the case in the past. They fully support me and sacrifice a lot to help me achieve.

I would love to keep pursuing basketball options in the future. I hope to attend a college in the US, and from there who knows? I would love to be able to pay my family back for the support they have given me in my life. I feel that to make it easier to attend a US College on scholarship, I need to have represented my country, and would not like to miss this selection due to financial reasons.

My school work has been a challenge. I am aware that I need to study and work hard to attend a US college, and I am trying my best to keep my grades up.

I am a proud Kiwi, and it is an honour to represent my country.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and I would be extremely grateful for any support you may be able to help me with.
