William Colenso College in Napier have identified Waka Ama as a sport with huge potential for their students not just in terms of sport but as a holistic cultural activity. With 82% of their students having Maori heritage it seems like a sensible solution in using Waka Ama to teach water safety, team work, interpersonal skills, history and culture to engage students especially those struggling in the classroom. For Everyone provided a grant to purchase 24 life jackets for the 2 Waka Ama teams to be able to be in the water at the same time. Kia kaha William Colenso College and all the best for 2014!!
