Description
Hi my name is Hamish Jones, I am 13 years old from Kaikoura. I grew up on a farm, a typical kiwi kid interested in sports, hunting and diving. Dad got my twin brother and I into rugby at an early age, starting in ripper and then our first year in the Marlborough club competition in the under 9 grade.
Throughout my life I have overcome a number of challenges. The first when I was at 1 ½ years of age when I contracted Meningitis. I fought in hospital for 6 weeks while Mum and Dad were at my side. In this time, I suffered a stroke affecting the right side of my body, I am very lucky that this does not affect me as much now except that have to wear glasses. A weekly challenge with playing rugby from Kaikoura is the travel. We travel to Blenheim every 2nd week to play, a journey of 1 1/2-2 hours in a bus. We also travel as far as Picton which is another half hour. When I got into my first rep team this extended to travelling to Blenheim twice a week for training as well. Last season Dad said we clocked at least 10,000 kms for rugby. I have now been in 5 Marlborough rep teams in the past 3 years which has meant a lot of travel but some awesome friendships made and rugby played.
I started my rugby in the backs, I have played most positions but most of my rep rugby I played as a winger. Last year I was one of the taller boys in the Under 52kg Marlborough team so I was selected as a lock and also as the captain. I had a great tournament, scoring 4 tries and being selected in the tournament team. I then returned to club rugby where I played No.7. From there I was named in the Under 13 rep team as the starting open side.
This year my parents have sent me to Marlborough Boys College in Blenheim, in order to chase my rugby dreams and to take out the travel. I hope to make the 1st XV for MBC and to play in the press cup competition in years to come. I hope that going to the rugby academy will help me kick start this goal. I want to learn as much as I can to help me with my game. I am dedicated to my rugby and I’m lucky to have supportive parents and family that help coach and push me.
I would really like your help to get this academy because playing sport from a small town is very expensive and takes a lot of dedication. Mum and Dad do what they can to support me, but with your help I can continue my rugby journey to reach your TV screens one day. Thank you for your help!
Yours faithfully, Hamish Jones
