The Whangarei BHS Old Boys’ Association built a golf facility at Whangarei Boys High School to cater for the golfing talent that existed in the school plus also to attract other students to the game.  The facility is currently used by students aged 13-17 years of age from both WBHS and also Opononi School. The main priority is the students. The student programme is designed to provide:

• Course management skills
• Knowledge of equipment
• Game preparation skills
• Life skills
• Short game skills
• Self-discipline and control
• Provide basic full swing motion and sequence drills

The main purpose of the facility is to provide coaching to the WBHS students who wish to play, or learn how to play, golf. The facility also provides a place for students to come during interval and lunch times to practice.

Funding is required to pay for the coaching. WBHS is a decile 5 school and many students cannot afford to pay for regular coaching. This facility and programme gives them a chance to do something that they might not otherwise be able to. Last year the coaching fees, for 5 months of the year, were paid by the WBHS OBA but they are unable to do so this year as their funds are slowly diminishing. The students do pay a nominal membership fee each year which helps to maintain the facility and it is our fervent wish that parents are not burdened with another cost. We are trying to raise at least $10,000 that we believe is required to allow the students to all receive coaching , and which might also allow us to take these boys on a trip or two to golf courses.
