Hi, my name is Phoebe Harris and I am a swimmer from the Howick Pakuranga swim club.
I have been swimming ever since I was five years old and have always loved it. At age 11 my coach pulled me aside and told me to start swimming competitively as he saw potential in me. Over the years my swimming journey has been up and down. Despite this I am ready to go onto the next competition. I had to make a commitment to myself that I was not going to quit.
Four months after making that commitment, I medalled in the NZ Age Group Championships. It was a great starting point and I started really working on my nutrition, mental mindset and whole attitude towards swimming. This was the best decision ever.I know I have improved greatly at swimming, which is why I have set myself the goal of making it into the 2020 Olympic Team next year.
So far, the funds for all of my national meets have been covered by my parents. However, these next 9 months will be more expensive than anything they’ve had to support before. The competitions I will be seeking support for are the Swimming New South Wales Australia State Age Championships (December 2019 – $1300), and the Victorian Open LC Championships (February 2020 – $2500).
This assistance would mean so much to me and my family. It will enable me to be able to travel to two crucial competitions in my preparation for Olympic trials and beyond. It would also put me a step closer to pursuing my dream of competing for New Zealand as an international level swimmer. To compete at these overseas events with the experiences and opportunities they will offer me will be life changing and I would be very grateful. I will never give up on my dream.
My journey will reach into the hearts and minds of New Zealand as I want to show everyone that no matter what position you are in, you can achieve your dream. If you commit to every training and give everything 100% you can be great.
