GRANT ROUND COMPLETE

Description

Hi, I’m Liam and my dream is to make it to the Commonwealth Games!

My mum registered me in Athletics at the age of 4 years and my passion has grown ever since.  I participated in the annual Colgate Games Athletics competitions throughout my primary school years and won many medals. Once I reached high school, the competition got much harder. I’ve had many successful and unsuccessful moments racing.  Last year I qualified to represent New Zealand at the World School’s Cross Country Championships and placed 15th.  However, at the end of last year, I had to take time off due to an injury which was really disappointing. Although this was tough, this break allowed me time to focus on strengthening areas that I would have never had the time to do so before.  The components of my rehab were swimming and gym work, which allowed me to come back stronger and faster.  The last two years have been a difficult time for my family as my stepdad passed away in July 2017 after suffering from severe mental illness. This has been a really difficult time especially for my mum, so I try to help and be there for her as much as I can.  I encourage her to keep doing triathlons as they keep her busy and surrounded by many great people of all ages. I would like to do more to support men’s mental health and promote how important exercise is to keep our minds healthy.  Running has really helped me to manage these stressors and I feel that exercise is an important aspect of life.

I have recently been selected to represent New Zealand in the Australian Cross Country Nationals at the end of August. If I am able to find financial support this will enable me to continue competing in the sport that I love and possibly open up opportunities of competing at an international level.

Any support you can offer, big or small will go a long way in helping me to develop as an athlete.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Liam
